This device is designed for delicate dissection and manipulation during the following procedures:
General Surgery
Laparoscopic Appendectomy: Laparoscopic removal of the appendix. This procedure usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. When infected, the appendix attaches itself to the peritoneum. The Kittner is used to loosen the appendix, via blunt dissection from the peritoneum.
Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Laparoscopic surgical removal of the gallbladder to treat inflammation (Cholecystitis) and / or presence of stones in the gallbladder. The Kittner is used to blunt dissect the cystic duct as well as the cystic artery. This maneuver enables the surgeon to expose the common duct clearly and without the risk of inadvertent injury. Injuries occur sometimes due to the accidental incision into the common duct.
Laparoscopic Vagotomy: Laparoscopic cutting of branches of the vagus nerve, to reduce the secretion of gastric juice and thus lessen the chances of ulcer recurrence. The vagus nerve is one of a pair of motor and sensory nerves located along the esophagus. The Kittner is used to blunt dissect around the esophagus, which is very fragile. Poking a hole in the esophagus would be catastrophic. By using the Kittner, the surgeon reduces the risk of injuring the esophagus.
Laparoscopic Bowel Resection: Laparoscopic surgical removal of a portion of the bowel (intestines, especially the large intestine). The surgeon removes part of the bowel, then proceeds to put it back together. Patients who have had a lot of surgery will often have their bowel attached to the abdominal wall (adhesions). The surgeon uses the Kittner to loosen these adhesions.
Gynecology (GYN)
Ectopic (Displaced) Pregnancies: Abnormal pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most often in the Fallopian tube. As the embryo develops, the tube ruptures, causing hemorrhage and requiring immediate surgery. (Also called a "Tubal" pregnancy). The Kittner is used to dissect without damaging the Fallopian tube.
L.A.V.H. (Laparoscopic Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy): Laparoscopic assisted surgical removal of the uterus, via the vagina. The Kittner is used to push the bladder flap up or down to create better access.
Birch Procedure (Suspension of the bladder): This procedure allows the bladder to be attached to the Coppers Ligament in order to reduce or eliminate pressure on the bladder. The Kittner allows the surgeon to remove the adhesions and tissue from Coppers Ligament thus allowing the bladder to be attached to it.
Other Various GYN Procedures: The Kittner is used for any delicate manipulation of the ovaries or to hold them up. Traditionally, a metal probe is used for this purpose, but the ovaries have a tendency to "slip off" the probe. The rough surface of the Kittner eliminates this problem, thus facilitating the surgeons work.
Thoracic Surgery
Performed by General Surgeon or Cardio-Vascular Surgeon. In thoracic surgery, it is important to make the lung properly adhere to the pleura (the delicate membrane covering the lungs and inner surface of the chest). In order to create adhesion, the surgeon will "rough up" the pleura using the Kittner.
Urology
The Kittner is used in instances of prostate cancer, for dissection of nodes from the aorta and the obturator space in the pelvis.
